The main differences between a CAT Walk and a CAT Walk Plus are:
- A CAT Walk is guided by a certified volunteer trained by MYCAT staff. A CAT Walk Plus is guided by a MYCAT staff thus allowing participants to gain a greater and in-depth information on MYCAT’s conservation efforts at the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor.
- On CAT Walk Plus, participants will get an opportunity to check a camera trap which was set to monitor wildlife presence in the area. This activity is not included in a CAT Walk because it requires MYCAT staff to be present on-site.
- The registration fee for a CAT Walk Plus includes round-trip transportation between Kuala Lumpur and Merapoh town. Whereas participants of a CAT Walk are expected to make their own way to Merapoh town.
- The registration fee for a CAT Walk Plus includes the purchase of tree saplings to be planted by participants at the degraded sites in the Sungai Yu Ecological Corridor.
- Weather permitting, a CAT Walk Plus can include a night drive through an oil palm plantation where participants have a chance of spotting nocturnal wildlife.
- Participants joining a CAT Walk Plus from Singapore are provided with a pre-trip briefing in Singapore prior to the trip. These briefings are conducted by CAT Walk Plus alumni who can share first-hand experiences and tips about CAT Walks. Participants based outside of Singapore can join the pre-trip briefings via video conference calls.
- Regardless of nationality, the registration fee for a CAT Walk Plus is the same. A 25% discount off the registration fee is also applicable for full-time students and repeat volunteers.
Terms and Conditions:
- A CAT Walk Plus takes place with a minimum of 6 participants, and a maximum of 8 participants per trip based on a first-come-first-served basis.
- Volunteers must be above 18 years of age, in good health and physical condition, and confident that they can complete a day walk of about 6km with little assistance. Prior experience in hiking, and trekking in the Malaysian rainforest is an advantage. MYCAT staff will be present throughout the programme period.
- To confirm the spot in the programme, volunteers must register and pay the participation fees in full 30-days before the Day 1 of the CAT Walk trip.
- All cancellation and/or transfers request must be made in writing to cat@malayantiger.net at least 30 days prior to the CAT Walk date and the participation fee will be partially refunded.

The Tigers of Taman Negara: a journey into citizen cat conservation – Current Conservation
After an early morning rush to the airport, I wake from a sleep, soothed by the smooth Malaysian highways, and look with bleary eyes out of the window. I have to blink a few times to make sure I’m not still dreaming.
